A Big Island company that plans to put macadamia nut shells to good use is getting a federal boost.
Five million dollars in stimulus funds will be given to "Big Island Carbon" to finish their plant in Kawaihae.
The plan will convert ac nut shells into granular activated carbon.
Officials say the carbon can be used to generate power, filter air, and purify water.
Big Island Carbon broke ground on the $25 million facility in April of '09.
The company hopes to buy about 10,000 tons of mac nut shells each year to turn into carbon.
